I had decided to enter a bike seeing as I was getting late for class. It was 8:45 and class was supposed to start by 9am. It was my first day of classes in the University. I sent a silent prayer to the heavens that my day should go well. I had cased the venue for my lectures when the timetable was released last week, so all I had to do was..
Me:Bike! Bike!
(A bikeman wearing a faded helmet stops)
Bikeman:(In pidgin) Where you wan go?
Me:Faculty of Tech
(Bikeman sizes me up, obviously reading the fresher aura on me and said...)
Bikeman: Na N200 oh
Some aspect of my mind probably knew he was duping me but I didn't care 'coz I did not want to be late for my first class. I boarded the bike and off we went.
As I arrived at my faculty, I headed for the department of petroleum engineering FLT and entered through the back entrance and found a seat. The lecture hall was full with close to 200 students. The seat was situated close to the window, beside a very pretty dark girl. The decision to pick this seat may or may not have been influenced by the dark pretty girl sitting right beside the seat. The teacher passed a sheet around for our details and I got to know the pretty dark girl had a name - Lateefah. The teacher introduced himself as Prof. Olakunle and his course was pet 112, introduction tonpetroleum engineering. After the brief introduction he began teaching immediately. I had read extensively on this course and this topic - mechanics of engineering - was something I understood well enough, so I decided to get to know Lateefah better(I can't come and start dulling myself na).
Me:(with my trademark killer smile) Hey, wassup
She peered at me over her glasses. Did i mention she wore specs? Yeah she did. I never thought Ojugo girls could ever look hot,but Lateefah rocked it in her pink skirt and white top. Her hair was properly styled to fall back on her shoulders and expose the delicate curve of her neck. She looked at me carefully then mumbled something.
Me: Err....sorry i didn't get you
Lateefah: (speaking through clenched teeth) The professor is watching us!
I looked up to see Prof Olakunle giving me a 'warn yourself' glare as he explained a concept to the class.
Me: (whispering) So, what's your name?
She gave me an exasperated "really??" look and rolled her eyes. She saw me still looking at her expectantly and whispered back.
Lateefah: I don't give my name to strangers
I smiled to myself. She wanted to play tough abii. Two can play this game.
Me: My name is Collins, I'm from Lagos, playful, best food is plantain and egg, I like pretty girls.
At the last part of my sentence the corners of her mouth curved up in a smile. I jubilated inwardly. Mission one accomplished! I was on a roll now and I continued..
Me: And now you know more about me than everyone in this hall.
Lateefah:(resigned) I'm lateefah
The inner me gave a whoop! Mission 2 accomplished!!
We continued back and forth and I made her laugh a lot, to the chagrin of Prof Olakunle. When we we're given a quick class work, I chilled till the class was over and turned to Lateefah to continue my parole when she pushed a peice of paper into my hand, got up and left in a hurry.
I unwrapped the paper slowly and written in the middle in a neat cursive script were the words:
"080945****8
Call me"
I grinned to myself and stood up, heading for the next class. Why did i even bother wondering if today was going to go well? I swaggered out of the FLT with the paper in my pocket making me feel like the luckiest guy on earth.
Comment "done" if you're done reading. ✌
