Just lying on my bed, reflecting on the everyday shii that an average nigerian teen passes through.
For a guy, ure stuck with responsibility. Do this, do that. Don't do this, don't do that. There are some whose cases can only be labelled as 'omo-get-insideness'. I mean, imagine this routine.
'Home=>School=>Home '.
You're not allowed to visit friends or invite friends over.
You're not allowed to express yourself.
If you're a girl and ure caught receiving calls from Boys.... Just start writing your will.
Or a boy looks at you too long... Ur own don done niyen.
On top wetin?... This method seriously affects later in life. I have personally seen a lot of cases in which 'butty' children, when they get their first taste of freedom are insatiable. Don't get me wrong, I feel what those parents are trying to do, but.... One day, this child ure enforcing your will on will grow up, and you won't be able to flog him when he doesn't see things your way.
I personally believe the best way go train a child is to lay out his choices before him. Explain the individual merits and demerits of each choices. Explain the long-term and short-term benefits of each, and let him choose. We're not all stupid na.
You stressing that she must not have a boyfriend. You never explained why. You stressing that he must not drink, you never explained why. Gone are the days when u use thick voice on your children and they become docile. Now, parents are being sued to court by their kids. Give us choices, alternatives. Trust us. Build our confidence.
Don't say, 'don't have a boyfriend, say this I what will happen if you have a boyfriend'.
Don't say 'Don't leave the house, say, tell me where you're going and who you wanna visit'
Give us a choice!
